Early Reading Skills for Preschool & Kindergarten

Help your preschooler or kindergartener build strong early reading skills with simple, play-based activities for phonics, letter sounds, blending, sight words, and early literacy.

Learning to read doesn’t happen all at once. Children develop a range of skills that gradually come together to help them recognize letters, connect sounds to print, read simple words, and eventually understand what they read.

In this guide, you’ll learn which early reading skills matter most, when children typically begin developing them, how phonics and sight words work together, and how to support reading development at home.

Learning to read is a step-by-step process.

Children build skills gradually, with each stage supporting the next:

Vocabulary → Listening Skills → Phonological Awareness → Letter Recognition → Letter Sounds → Phonics → Blending → CVC Words → High-Frequency Words → Simple Sentences → Beginner Books

Before children become confident early readers, they benefit from strong foundations in:

• Listening and language skills

• Phonological awareness

• Letter recognition

• Letter-sound knowledge

• Blending and segmenting

• Vocabulary

• Early writing skills

• Understanding and talking about stories

If you’re just beginning, start with these foundational guides:

You don’t need to teach everything at once.

Start with the skills your child is currently developing and gradually build from there.

Build Listening and Sound Awareness

It's more precise and avoids sounding like a rigid developmental rule. Your Listening article itself describes listening as a foundation for phonological awareness.

Try:

• Listening Activities for Preschoolers

• Rhyming Activities for Preschoolers

• Beginning Sounds Activities for Preschoolers

These playful activities help children pay attention to sounds and prepare for more formal phonics learning.

Teach Letter Sounds

Once children become familiar with letters, begin connecting letters to the sounds they represent.

Practice Blending

Blending helps children put individual sounds together to read a word.

Start Reading Simple Words

As children develop their phonics knowledge, they can begin blending sounds to read simple CVC words such as:

cat · sun · map · dog · pin

Build Early Reading Confidence

Once these foundations are developing, children can begin combining their skills to read simple words, phrases, and sentences.

There is no single age when every child is ready to read.

Many children begin recognizing letters during the preschool years, start connecting letters with sounds as they develop phonics knowledge, and later begin blending sounds into simple words.

The timing varies from child to child.

Rather than focusing only on age, look at the skills your child is developing.

Children benefit from building:

✔ Vocabulary and language skills

✔ Listening skills

✔ Phonological awareness

✔ Letter recognition

✔ Letter-sound knowledge

✔ Blending skills

✔ Early writing skills

✔ Confidence with books and stories

Every child develops differently, but there are some skills that can indicate growing reading readiness.

Your child may be developing early reading readiness if they can:

• Recognize some uppercase and lowercase letters

• Name familiar letters

• Identify some common letter sounds

• Notice words that rhyme

• Hear the beginning sound in simple words

• Listen to and talk about stories

• Show interest in books and print

• Recognize their own name

• Attempt to write or copy letters

• Blend simple sounds with support

• Enjoy playing with letters and sounds

Your child doesn’t need to have mastered every skill before beginning early reading activities.

The goal is to identify what they already know and provide playful practice for the skills they are still developing.

Sight words are words that a reader recognizes automatically without needing to sound them out each time. Many sight words are high-frequency words, but the terms aren't exactly interchangeable."

Examples include:

• the

• and

• is

• you

• said

Some high-frequency words can be decoded using phonics, while others contain spelling patterns that may be less predictable for beginning readers.

The goal is not simply to memorize hundreds of words.

Children need a strong understanding of how letters and sounds work, while also developing automatic recognition of common words they encounter frequently.

The answer is both — but phonics provides an important foundation for learning to decode words.

Phonics Helps Children:

✔ Connect letters and sounds

✔ Sound out unfamiliar words

✔ Decode simple words

✔ Recognize spelling patterns

✔ Become more independent readers

High-Frequency Words Help Children:

✔ Recognize common words more automatically

✔ Read familiar text more smoothly

✔ Spend less effort decoding very common words

✔ Focus more attention on meaning

Rather than choosing between phonics and sight words, combine them.

Start with strong phonics instruction and introduce appropriate high-frequency words alongside it.

Phonics Guide: Teaching Phonics Step by Step

Then practice common words with your child through reading, games, writing, and everyday activities.

Step 1: Start Small

Introduce only a few words at a time.

Choose words that are appropriate for your child’s current reading level and practice them regularly rather than introducing a large list all at once.

Step 2: Use Multi-Sensory Practice

Young children often learn best when they can see, say, hear, move, and write.

Try:

✔ Tracing words

✔ Building words with letters

✔ Writing words

✔ Finding familiar words in books

✔ Matching words and pictures

✔ Saying the word while pointing to it

You can also combine reading practice with:

• Alphabet & Letter Recognition Activities

Step 3: Practice Words in Context

Children need to see words being used for a purpose.

Look for familiar words in:

• Favorite books

• Simple sentences

• Labels

• Games

• Everyday print

Reading words in context helps children connect word recognition with meaning.

Sight word practice doesn’t need to feel like formal schoolwork.

Try simple activities such as:

• Word hunts around the house

• Matching word cards

• Building words with magnetic letters

• Writing words in sand or salt

• Tracing words with fingers

• Finding target words in favorite books

• Making simple sentences with familiar words

• Playing memory or matching games

Keep activities short and playful.

A few minutes of enjoyable practice can be more effective than long sessions that leave your child frustrated.

Early reading and writing develop alongside one another.

Children need opportunities to strengthen the small muscles and coordination they use for:

• Holding pencils

• Drawing

• Tracing

• Forming letters

• Cutting

• Manipulating small objects

Sight word practice is most effective when it is part of a broader early reading approach.

Don’t Skip Phonological Awareness

Children need opportunities to listen to, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken words.

Explore:

What Is Phonological Awareness?

Don’t Rely Only on Memorization

Children benefit from understanding how letters and sounds work rather than memorizing every unfamiliar word.

Use sight word practice alongside phonics and reading.

Don’t Rush the Process

Children develop reading skills at different rates.

If a child is struggling with foundational skills, spend more time practicing those skills before moving on to increasingly difficult reading tasks.
